Keszthely bay - Lake Balaton (HU)

Geographical location: SW shore of lake Balaton, located in the middle of West Hungary.

Type of waterway: large bay of a freshwater continental lake. Holiday resort.

Contamination type and problem: mud layers containing significant amount of phosphor - eutrophication

The region was affected to highest degree by the drainage of natural wetland bio-filters from river Zala. The bottom of the lake is covered with a 15 – 30 cm thick layer of very soft, unconsolidated sludge. This layer is underlain by a thick layer of consolidated, gas bearing mud.

Typical water depth: 3-4 m

Water conductivity: 650 μS/cm
